  1. “The Marian Shrine at Montenero in Livorno, Italy, possesses the largest collection of votive paintings in the whole world. A votive canvas depicts an officer and the medal of ‘Our Lady of Montenero’ in the officer’s breast pocket, which miraculously stopped a direct shot from killing him, the bullet and medal were preserved. Other votive offerings depict Italian soldiers invoking Our Lady amidst the detonating mortars and the shelling of various battles of the First World War. All images illustrate abundantly Our Lady’s miraculous protection, occurring in the years 1916 – 1919, during battles taking place in the Italian Alps, in Mathausen, Austria, Monfalcone and Monte Rombon, Italy. The soldiers’ wives pledged many vows to ‘Our Lady of Montenero,’ for the safe return of their husbands. In thanksgiving many placed their votive offerings in the shrine and were happily reunited with their husbands.”

The above passage is from your webpage and is of great interest to me. .My husband and I spent a cool, damp day visiting the charming town and the cathedral at Montenero and were edified by the numerous ex voto offerings left in thankful testimony to so many lives saved through the protection of Our Lady of Montenero. At the time, we were visiting my son, an American Army officer fortunate enough to be stationed in Tuscany. Immediately I returned home, I tried to find a way to purchase a medal to give to my son for his future protection. I found a site that said they could make one for me. I instructed them to proceed. That was many months ago and I have never heard from them since.

My son is now in harm’s way in a most dangerous area of Afghanistan. I would dearly love to purchase a medal of the Madonna of Montenero to send for him to wear. We, his family, pray for his safe return to see his first child, a son who will be born before he returns. Can you possibly guide me to a place where I can find this medal? Any help you can provide will be gratefullyy appreciated.

    • Well I am Catholic and the wearing of such medals is usually worn by Catholics who try to live that way. However, if one reads this http://catholicsouthernfront.wordpress.com/the-protestant-soldier-and-the-icon-of-our-lady-ii/ one would conclude that the wearing of such sacred (blessed by a real Catholic priest) medals and scapulars are not just for Catholics.
Erm… I am not American so I cannot really refer you to somebody I know in the States however you could check out these pages http://www.ewtn.com/vexperts/showmessage.asp?number=500834&Pg=Forum12&Pgnu=&recnu= and http://www.franciscan-sfo.org/index.html

Make sure that on acquiring the medal you have it blessed. What can I say more… thank you for your valuable comment and keep in mind that Christians have been battling Christians for centuries and one doesn’t know who the good Lord sides with…. I guess that the wars of religion are over and God forbid that they should return but in todays world these matters are still important – we truly shouldnt forget the experience gained by the world’s Christian ancestors – as studied in this blog. Most wars are fought for various reasons – wars of religion are usually just part of the whole issue.

      Best Regards
